Intended Use
The Culligan Soft Water Service Company Deionizer and Carbon Exchange tanks are primary or temporary devices to provide water for hemodialysis applications per the requirements of ANSI/AAMI RD62. These tanks remove chlorine, chloramines, total organic carbons and total dissolved solids from water used to dilute dialysis concentrate to form dialysate, in reprocessing of hemodialyzers, as supply water to the dialysis machines and equipment rinse and disinfection. Upon exhaustion, these tanks will be replaced with other tanks containing newly regenerated resin, or with new resin altogether. These tanks are components of a larger water treatment system employing adequate pre-treatment and post-treatment sections. Culligan's tanks are not to be used alone.
Device Description
The Culligan Soft Water Service Company, Deionizer and Carbon Exchange Service for Hemodialysis includes carbon filtration for the removal of chlorine and chloramines and deionizer (DI) exchange tanks for the removal of contaminants from the water through an ion exchange process to provide AAMI quality water for hemodialysis applications.

No
The document describes a water treatment system using carbon filtration and ion exchange, with no mention of AI or ML technologies.

No
The device provides treated water for hemodialysis applications, but it is a component of a larger system that ultimately supports the dialysis process, which is therapeutic. The device itself is for water treatment, not for direct therapeutic intervention on a patient.

No
The device is a water treatment system designed to provide purified water for hemodialysis applications. It does not diagnose any medical condition or disease.

No

The device description clearly states it includes physical tanks containing carbon and deionizer resin, which are hardware components used for water filtration and ion exchange.

Based on the provided text, this device is not an IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic).

Here's why:

  • Intended Use: The intended use clearly states that the device provides water for hemodialysis applications. This involves treating water that will be used in contact with the patient's blood during dialysis, or for preparing solutions that will be in contact with the patient.
  • Device Description: The description details a water treatment system using carbon filtration and deionization. These processes are for purifying water, not for analyzing biological samples or providing diagnostic information.
  • Lack of IVD Characteristics: The text does not mention any of the typical characteristics of an IVD, such as:
    • Analyzing biological samples (blood, urine, tissue, etc.)
    • Detecting or measuring substances in biological samples
    • Providing diagnostic information about a patient's health or condition
    • Using reagents or assays for analysis

The device is a component of a water treatment system used in a medical setting, but its function is to purify water, not to perform in vitro diagnostic testing.

§ 876.5665 Water purification system for hemodialysis.

(a)
Identification. A water purification system for hemodialysis is a device that is intended for use with a hemodialysis system and that is intended to remove organic and inorganic substances and microbial contaminants from water used to dilute dialysate concentrate to form dialysate. This generic type of device may include a water softener, sediment filter, carbon filter, and water distillation system.(b)
Classification. Class II (special controls). The device, when it is a water purification subsystem disinfectant, is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 876.9.
