The summary describes a traditional automated antimicrobial susceptibility testing system based on microdilution methodology and growth monitoring. There is no mention of AI or ML in the device description, intended use, or performance studies. The "Mentions AI, DNN, or ML" field is explicitly marked as "Not Found".
No
The device is described as a "laboratory aid in the determination of in vitro susceptibility to antimicrobial agents" and is used for "antimicrobial susceptibility testing." It does not directly treat or prevent a disease.
Yes
The device aids in the determination of in vitro susceptibility to antimicrobial agents, which is a key step in diagnosing how an infection can be treated. It identifies the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and provides an interpretive category result, both of which are diagnostic information used to guide treatment decisions for patients with bacterial infections.
No
The device description clearly details physical components like "AST Cards," "saline," and the "VITEK® 2 Systems" which are instruments that fill, seal, and incubate the cards. This indicates a hardware component is integral to the device's function.
Based on the provided information, yes, this device is an IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic).
Here's why:
- Intended Use: The intended use explicitly states it is "designed for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Gram negative bacilli" and is "intended for use with the VITEK® 2 Compact Systems as a laboratory aid in the determination of in vitro susceptibility to antimicrobial agents." The phrase "in vitro susceptibility" is a key indicator of an IVD.
- Device Description: The description details a method for testing isolated colonies in a laboratory setting using a miniaturized microdilution technique. This is a typical process for in vitro diagnostic testing.
- Performance Studies: The performance studies compare the device's results to a "CLSI broth microdilution reference method," which is a standard reference method for in vitro susceptibility testing.
- Intended User/Care Setting: The intended user is a "laboratory aid," further supporting its use in a laboratory setting for diagnostic purposes.
The device is designed to perform tests on biological samples (isolated colonies of bacteria) in vitro (outside the body) to provide information that aids in diagnosis and treatment decisions (determining susceptibility to antimicrobial agents). This aligns perfectly with the definition of an In Vitro Diagnostic device.

Active in vitro and in clinical infections: Escherichia coli Klebsiella pneumoniae Proteus mirabilis
In vitro data available but clinical significance is unknown: Citrobacter freundii Citrobacter koseri Enterobacter aerogenes Enterobacter cloacae Klebsiella oxytoca (excluding ESBL producing isolates) Morganella morganii Proteus vulgaris Providencia rettgeri Providencia stuartii Serratia marcescens
The VITEK @ 2 Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test (AST) is intended to be used with the VITEK® 2 Systems for the automated quantitative or qualitative susceptibility testing of isolated colonies for the most clinically significant aerobic gram-negative bacilli, Staphylococus spp., Enterococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and clinically significant yeast.

Device Description
The VITEK® 2 Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test (AST) is intended to be used with the VITEK® 2 Systems for the automated quantitative susceptibility testing of isolated colonies for the most clinically significant aerobic gram-negative bacilli, Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and clinically significant yeast.
The antimicrobial presented in VITEK® 2 AST-GN Cards is in concentrations equivalent by efficacy to standard method concentrations in mcg/ml. The VITEK® 2 AST Cards are essentially miniaturized versions of the doubling dilution technique for determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) microdilution methodology.
The isolate to be tested is diluted to a standardized concentration in 0.45 - 0.50% saline before being used to rehydrate the antimicrobial medium within the card. The VITEK® 2 automatically fills, seals and places the card into the incubator/reader. The VITEK® 2 Compact has a manual filling and sealing operation. The VITEK® 2 monitors the growth of each well in the card over a defined period of time (up to 18 hours). At the completion of the incubation cycle, a report is generated that contains the MIC value along with the interpretive category result for each antimicrobial contained on the card.

An external evaluation was conducted with fresh and stock clinical isolates, as well as a set of challenge strains. The external evaluations were designed to confirm the acceptability of VITEK® 2 AST-GN Ertapenem by comparing its performance with the CLSI broth microdilution reference method incubated at 16-20 hrs. The data is representative of performance on both the VITEK®2 and VITEK® 2 Compact instrument platforms.
