The device description and intended use clearly describe a purely mechanical grip/handle for a syringe, with no mention of any computational or data-driven features.
No
Explanation: The device is described as a grip/handle to assist with the injection of a drug, not as a device that delivers a therapeutic effect itself. Its purpose is to provide leverage and comfort for administering a drug, which is separate from the drug's therapeutic action.
No
Explanation: The device is described as a 'grip/handle' to assist with self-administered injections, providing leverage and an ergonomic handle. There is no mention of it being used to diagnose conditions or process diagnostic information.
No
The device is described as a "reusable, grip/handle" made of "one-piece plastic," clearly indicating it is a physical hardware device, not software.
Based on the provided information, this device is not an IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic).
Here's why:
- IVD Definition: In vitro diagnostics are tests performed on samples taken from the human body, such as blood, urine, or tissue, to detect diseases, conditions, or infections. They are used to provide information for diagnosis, monitoring, or screening.
- Device Function: The Syringe Grip for the AVONEX prefilled syringe is a physical device designed to assist with the delivery of a drug (AVONEX) into the body through injection. It provides a handle and leverage for the user during the injection process.
- Lack of Diagnostic Function: The device itself does not analyze any biological samples or provide any diagnostic information about the patient's health or condition. Its purpose is purely mechanical assistance for drug administration.
Therefore, the Syringe Grip falls under the category of a medical device used for drug delivery, not an in vitro diagnostic device.

Device Description
The Syringe Grip for the AVONEX pre-filled syringe is a reusable, grip/handle that is designed to assist the user with the Intramuscular injection of 0.5 mL of AVONEX from a prefilled syringe and single lumen hypodermic needle. The syringe is securely snapped into the one-piece plastic grip/handle for the primary purpose of providing patients more surface area, hence leverage, with which to hold the syringe while performing manual injections. Using the Syringe Grip for the AVONEX pre-filled syringe instead of direct injection with the re-filled syringe offers the patient a more comfortable and ergonomic handle to more easily only and inject the drug. The AVONEX pre-filled syringes and commercially available single humen hypodermic needles are provided separately.

Dear Dr. Cohen:
We have reviewed your Section 510(k) premarket notification of intent to market the device referenced above and have determined the device is substantially equivalent (for the indications for use stated in the enclosure) to legally marketed predicate devices marketed in interstate commerce prior to May 28, 1976, the enactment date of the Medical Device Amendments, or to devices that have been reclassified in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Act) that do not require approval of a premarket approval application (PMA). You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act. The general controls provisions of the Act include requirements for annual registration, listing of devices, good manufacturing practice, labeling, and prohibitions against misbranding and adulteration.
If your device is classified (see above) into either class II (Special Controls) or class III (PMA), it may be subject to such additional controls. Existing major regulations affecting your device can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, Parts 800 to 898. In addition, FDA may publish further announcements concerning your device in the Federal Register.
