Intended Use

The Chondral Dart is intended for the use in fixation of small bone fragments, such as apical fragments, osteochondral fragments and cancellous fragments. Specific applications include the following: Apical fragments (radial head, patellar rim, navicular, metacarpal/metatarsal), osteochondral fragments (talus vault, femoral condyle) and cancellous fragments (talus).

Device Story

Arthrex Chondral Dart is a biodegradable fixation device; molded from Poly(L-lactide). Device measures 1.3 mm diameter by 18 mm length; features barbs to facilitate bone fixation. Used by surgeons in clinical settings for orthopedic procedures; device is pushed into place to create an interference fit for securing small bone fragments. Provides mechanical stabilization of fracture sites; benefits patient by maintaining fragment position during healing process. Device is non-electronic and non-software based.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided; bench testing only.

Technological Characteristics

Material: Poly(L-lactide). Form factor: 1.3 mm diameter, 18 mm length, barbed pin. Principle: Interference fit fixation. Energy source: None (mechanical). Sterilization: Not specified.

Indications for Use

Indicated for fixation of small bone fragments including apical, osteochondral, and cancellous fragments in patients requiring stabilization of radial head, patellar rim, navicular, metacarpal/metatarsal, talus vault, or femoral condyle fractures.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.
