Indications for Use
Imaging and observation of the cellular layers of the anterior segment of the human eye, for the diagnosis and management of anterior segment diseases.
Device Story
The HRT II / RCM is a confocal laser scanning microscope used for imaging the anterior segment of the eye. It utilizes a 670 nm Class I diode laser to scan the cornea; light reflected or backscattered from the cornea is detected via a confocal optical arrangement. The device captures two-dimensional optical sections; by shifting the focal plane, it generates a sequence of images to create a three-dimensional representation of corneal layers. The system includes a laser scanning camera, Rostock Cornea Module optics, a mount with headrest, and a PC. A sterile, single-use PMMA plate provides corneal contact during examination. The device is operated by a clinician in a clinical setting. Images are displayed on a monitor, stored on a hard drive, and analyzed using Heidelberg Eye Explorer software, which includes cell density measurement tools. The output assists clinicians in diagnosing and managing anterior segment diseases by providing high-resolution, layer-by-layer visualization of corneal structures.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing only. The device was tested for compliance with IEC 60601-1 (electrical safety) and IEC 60601-1-2 (electromagnetic compatibility). Laser safety was verified per 21 CFR 1040.10 and IEC 60825-1:1993+A2:2001. No clinical trial data was required for this 510(k) clearance.
Technological Characteristics
Confocal laser scanning microscope; 670 nm Class I diode laser source; resonant and galvanometric scanning motors; avalanche photodiode detector; 63x water immersion lens; 2-micron lateral resolution; 4-micron depth resolution; sterile single-use PMMA contact plate; PC-based image acquisition and storage; Heidelberg Eye Explorer software; connectivity via PC hard drive/RAM.
Indications for Use
Indicated for imaging and observation of cellular layers of the anterior segment of the human eye for diagnosis and management of anterior segment diseases in patients requiring such examination.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
An AC-powered slitlamp biomicroscope is an AC-powered device that is a microscope intended for use in eye examination that projects into a patient's eye through a control diaphragm a thin, intense beam of light.
Special Controls
*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The device, when it is intended only for the visual examination of the anterior segment of the eye, is classified as Group 1 per FDA-recognized consensus standard ANSI Z80.36, does not provide any quantitative output, and is not intended for screening or automated diagnostic indications, is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 886.9.

#### Device Description
The system consists of the HRT II laser scanning camera, the Rostock Cornea Module optics, a mount with headrest, a power supply, and a personal computer. For an examinaoptivs, a modily with nead sollule optics is placed on the laser scaming camera, positioned in front of the patient's eye, in contact with the cornea. The contact surface is a sterile PMMA plate. Images of the anterior segment are acquired, displayed on the comsterner monitor and stored on the hard drive of the computer from where the images can be retrieved at a later time.
