Indications for Use

The Encore System is intended for anterior advancement of the tongue base and hyoid suspension. It is indicated for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and /or snoring.

Device Story

Encore System is a surgical implant kit for anterior tongue base and hyoid suspension. Components include integrated suture passer with #2-0 braided polyester suture, bone screws, bone screw inserters, suspension line lock tool, threading tool, drill bit, and suspension lines (#2 braided polyester or #2 braided polyethylene). Device is used by surgeons to fix soft tissue of tongue base and hyoid bone to the mandible. Procedure aims to reduce airway obstruction in OSA patients. System is non-electronic; no software or algorithms involved. MRI safety labeling updated to allow scanning under specific 1.5T or 3T conditions; drill bit length increased from 5mm to 10mm.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Performance testing was conducted to verify MRI safety and compatibility of the implantable metallic components under specified magnetic field conditions.

Technological Characteristics

Surgical kit containing bone screws, suspension lines (#2 braided polyester or polyethylene), suture passer, and associated manual surgical tools. Drill bit length is 10 mm. Device is non-electronic, mechanical, and implantable. MRI safety parameters defined for 1.5T and 3T environments.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients requiring anterior advancement of the tongue base and hyoid suspension for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and/or snoring.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Intraoral devices for snoring and intraoral devices for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are devices that are worn during sleep to reduce the incidence of snoring and to treat obstructive sleep apnea. The devices are designed to increase the patency of the airway and to decrease air turbulence and airway obstruction. The classification includes palatal lifting devices, tongue retaining devices, and mandibular repositioning devices.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special control for these devices is the FDA guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Intraoral Devices for Snoring and/or Obstructive Sleep Apnea; Guidance for Industry and FDA.”
