The document describes a traditional broth dilution susceptibility test read visually or by an instrument, with no mention of AI or ML. The performance studies focus on agreement with expected results and reproducibility, not on training or validation of an AI/ML model.
No.
The device is used to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to antimicrobial agents, which is a diagnostic function, not a therapeutic one.
Yes
The device is intended to determine bacterial antimicrobial agent susceptibility, specifically for aerobic streptococci to Azithromycin. This function helps identify the best treatment approach for infections, which is a diagnostic purpose.
No
The device description explicitly mentions a "MicroScan MICroSTREP plus® Panel" which is a physical panel containing antimicrobial agents, and the use of a "MicroScan® WalkAway instrument" for incubation and reading. This indicates the device includes hardware components beyond just software.
Yes, this device is an IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic).
Here's why:
- Intended Use: The intended use is "To determine bacterial antimicrobial agent susceptibility." This is a diagnostic purpose, specifically identifying how susceptible bacteria are to different antimicrobial agents.
- Indications for Use: The indications clearly state that the panel is used to determine susceptibility of colonies grown on solid media of aerobic streptococci. This involves testing biological samples (bacterial colonies) in vitro (outside the body).
- Device Description: The description details a miniaturized broth dilution susceptibility test where antimicrobial agents are diluted and panels are rehydrated with broth and inoculated with a standardized suspension of the organism. This is a classic in vitro diagnostic method.
- Performance Studies: The performance studies compare the device's results to "Expected Results" and a "CLSI frozen Reference Panel," which are standard practices for evaluating the accuracy of diagnostic tests.
- Predicate Device: The predicate device is also an "Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test (AST) System," which falls under the category of IVDs.
The device is designed to analyze biological samples (bacterial cultures) in vitro to provide information about a patient's potential response to antimicrobial treatment, which is a core function of an IVD.

Device Description
The MicroScan MICroSTREP plus® Panel is used to determine quantitative and/or qualitative antimicrobial agent susceptibility of colonies grown on solid media of aerobic streptococci, including Streptococcus pneumoniae. After inoculation, panels are incubated for 20 - 24 hours at 35°C +/-1 °C in a non-CO2 incubator, and read according to the Package Insert. The antimicrobial susceptibility tests are miniaturizations of the broth dilution susceptibility test. Various antimicrobial agents are diluted in water, buffer or minute concentrations of broth to concentrations bridging the range of clinical interest. Panels are rehydrated with 115 µl Mueller-Hinton broth supplemented with 2-5% lysed horse blood (LHB) and buffered with 50 mM HEPES, after inoculation of the broth with a standardized suspension of the organism in saline. After incubation in a non-CO2 incubator for 20-24 hours, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the test organism is manually read by observing the lowest antimicrobial concentration showing inhibition of growth. Additionally, the panels may be incubated in and read by a MicroScan® WalkAway instrument.
