Intended Use
The Twinheads® TH-103 Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripter is intended to fragment urinary stones in the kidney (renal pelvis and renal calyces) and ureter (upper, middle, and lower ureter).
Device Description
The Twinheads® TH-103 ESWL is a spark gap dual head shock wave lithotripter for the fragmentation of kidney and ureteral calculi. The Twinheads® TH-103 delivers a pair of shock wayes, which are separated from each other by a certain delay time, with perpendicular trajectories and overlapping focal zones. The pulse pairs or twin shocks are aligned with the calculi or stone utilizing legally marketed C-arm fluoroscopy system via two orientations. Also included is an accurate motorized table with carbon fiber top.

No
The summary describes a traditional shock wave lithotripter and does not mention any AI or ML components, image processing, or performance metrics typically associated with AI/ML devices.

Yes
The device is intended to fragment urinary stones in the kidney and ureter, which is a therapeutic intervention.

No
Explanation: The device is described as a lithotripter used to fragment urinary stones, which is a therapeutic function, not a diagnostic one. It uses C-arm fluoroscopy for stone alignment, but the primary purpose of the device itself is treatment.

No

The device description clearly states it is a "spark gap dual head shock wave lithotripter" and includes a "motorized table with carbon fiber top," indicating it is a hardware device.

No, this device is not an IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic).

Here's why:

  • IVD Definition: In Vitro Diagnostics are medical devices used to examine specimens taken from the human body (like blood, urine, or tissue) to provide information about a person's health.
  • Device Function: The Twinheads® TH-103 Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripter is used to physically fragment urinary stones within the body using shock waves. It does not analyze samples taken from the body.
  • Intended Use: The intended use clearly states it's for fragmenting urinary stones in the kidney and ureter, which are internal anatomical sites.
  • Device Description: The description details a physical device that delivers shock waves and uses fluoroscopy for targeting, not a device for analyzing biological samples.

Therefore, based on the provided information, the Twinheads® TH-103 is a therapeutic device, not an in vitro diagnostic device.

§ 876.5990 Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter.

(a)
Identification. An extracorporeal shock wave lithotripter is a device that focuses ultrasonic shock waves into the body to noninvasively fragment urinary calculi within the kidney or ureter. The primary components of the device are a shock wave generator, high voltage generator, control console, imaging/localization system, and patient table. Prior to treatment, the urinary stone is targeted using either an integral or stand-alone localization/imaging system. Shock waves are typically generated using electrostatic spark discharge (spark gap), electromagnetically repelled membranes, or piezoelectric crystal arrays, and focused onto the stone with either a specially designed reflector, dish, or acoustic lens. The shock waves are created under water within the shock wave generator, and are transferred to the patient's body using an appropriate acoustic interface. After the stone has been fragmented by the focused shock waves, the fragments pass out of the body with the patient's urine.(b)
Classification. Class II (special controls) (FDA guidance document: “Guidance for the Content of Premarket Notifications (510(k)'s) for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripters Indicated for the Fragmentation of Kidney and Ureteral Calculi.”)
