Intended Use
Synthes Resorbable Fixation System devices (Plates, Meshes, Screws and Tacks), are intended for use in fracture repair and reconstructive procedures of the craniofacial skeleton. In addition, Resorbable Meshes, Sheets, Screws, and Tacks may be used in non-load bearing applications for maintaining the relative position of and/or containing bony fragments, bone grafts (autograft or allograft) or bone graft substitutes in reconstruction of the craniofacial or mandibular areas.
Device Description
Synthes Resorbable Contourable Mesh is a resorbable material sheet that comes in various sizes and shapes in perforated patterns that allow for better anatomical conformity. It is a part of the Synthes Resorbable Fixation System and can be used with the screws, tacks, and instruments in that system.

The summary describes a resorbable material sheet for craniofacial fixation and does not mention any software, algorithms, or AI/ML capabilities.

No
The device is described as being for fracture repair and reconstructive procedures, which are not therapeutic in nature. The device is used to physically stabilize bony fragments or grafts, rather than treating a disease or condition.

No

Explanation: The device is described as a resorbable fixation system for fracture repair and reconstructive procedures of the craniofacial skeleton, which indicates a therapeutic or surgical function rather than a diagnostic one. There is no mention of it being used to identify or analyze medical conditions.

No

The device description clearly states it is a "resorbable material sheet" and part of a "Resorbable Fixation System" which includes physical components like plates, meshes, screws, and tacks. This indicates a hardware-based medical device, not software only.

Based on the provided information, this device is not an IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic).

Here's why:

  • Intended Use: The intended use clearly states the device is for "fracture repair and reconstructive procedures of the craniofacial skeleton" and for "maintaining the relative position of and/or containing bony fragments, bone grafts... in reconstruction of the craniofacial or mandibular areas." This describes a surgical implant used directly on the patient's body.
  • Device Description: The description details a "resorbable material sheet" used with screws, tacks, and instruments. This is consistent with a surgical fixation device.
  • Lack of IVD Characteristics: There is no mention of the device being used to examine specimens derived from the human body (like blood, urine, tissue samples, etc.) to provide information for diagnosis, monitoring, or treatment.

IVD devices are used in vitro (outside the body) to analyze biological samples. This device is used in vivo (inside the body) as a surgical implant.

Dear Ms. Silvestri:

We have reviewed your Section 510(k) premarket notification of intent to market the device referenced above and have determined the device is substantially equivalent (for the indications for use stated in the enclosure) to legally marketed predicate devices marketed in interstate commerce prior to May 28, 1976, the enactment date of the Medical Device Amendments, or to devices that have been reclassified in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Act) that do not require approval of a premarket approval application (PMA). You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act. The general controls provisions of the Act include requirements for annual registration, listing of devices, good manufacturing practice, labeling, and prohibitions against misbranding and adulteration.

If your device is classified (see above) into either class II (Special Controls) or class III (PMA), it may be subject to such additional controls. Existing major regulations affecting your device can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, Parts 800 to 898. In addition.
