The device description and performance studies focus on manual visual reading of broth dilution tests and comparison to a reference panel, with no mention of automated analysis or AI/ML techniques.
No.
This device is designed to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to antimicrobial agents, which aids in diagnosis and treatment planning rather than directly providing therapy.
Yes.
The device's intended use is to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to antimicrobial agents, which is a diagnostic purpose to guide treatment decisions.
No
The device description clearly outlines a physical panel, broth, and incubation process, indicating it is a hardware-based system for antimicrobial susceptibility testing, not a software-only device.
Based on the provided text, this device is an IVD (In Vitro Diagnostic).
Here's why:
- Intended Use: The intended use is to "determine bacterial antimicrobial agent susceptibility" and "determine quantitative and/or qualitative antimicrobial agent susceptibility of colonies grown on solid media". This is a classic definition of an in vitro diagnostic test, as it analyzes biological samples (bacterial colonies) outside of the body to provide information about a patient's condition (susceptibility to antibiotics).
- Device Description: The description details a laboratory test method involving rehydrating panels with broth, inoculating with a standardized suspension of the organism, incubating, and reading the results. This process is performed in vitro (in a lab setting).
- Performance Studies: The performance studies compare the device's performance to a "Reference panel," which is typical for validating IVD devices.
- Predicate Device: The mention of a "Predicate Device" (K963641; MicroScan® Streptococcus MIC Panel) is also a strong indicator that this is an IVD, as predicate devices are used in the regulatory pathway for new IVD submissions.
The entire context describes a laboratory test used to guide treatment decisions based on the characteristics of a bacterial sample, which falls squarely under the definition of an In Vitro Diagnostic device.

Device Description
The MicroScan® MICroSTREP plus™ is used to determine quantitative and/or qualitative antimicrobial agent susceptibility of colonies grown on solid media of aerobic streptococci, including Streptococcus pneumoniae. After inoculation, panels are incubated for 20 - 24 hours at 35°C +/- 1°C in a non-CO2 incubator, and read visually according to the Package Insert.
The antimicrobial susceptibility tests are miniaturizations of the broth dilution susceptibility test. Various antimicrobial agents are diluted in water, buffer or minute concentrations of broth to concentrations bridging the range of clinical interest. Panels are rehydrated with 115 ul Mueller-Hinton broth supplemented with 2-5% lysed horse blood (LHB) and buffered with 50 mM HEPES, after inoculation of the broth with a standardized suspension of the organism in saline. After incubation in a non-CO2 incubator for 20-24 hours, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the test organism is manually read by observing the lowest antimicrobial concentration showing inhibition of growth.
