Indications for Use

The device is intended to ventilate the middle ear cleft.

Device Story

Shah Permavent is a middle ear ventilation tube (tympanostomy tube) fabricated from silicone rubber. It features a single, circular, bevelled flange design. The device is used by otolaryngologists to provide ventilation to the middle ear cleft in patients suffering from chronic ear conditions. By maintaining an open pathway through the tympanic membrane, the tube facilitates pressure equalization and drainage, thereby treating conditions like glue ear or eustachian tube dysfunction. The device is implanted surgically in a clinical setting.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided; substantial equivalence is based on design, material, and functional comparison to legally marketed predicate devices.

Technological Characteristics

Fabricated from silicone rubber; features a single, circular, bevelled flange design. The device is a passive implantable ventilation tube. No electronic, software, or energy-based components.

Indications for Use

Indicated for the treatment of otitis media with effusion (glue ear), eustachian tube dysfunction, and other conditions requiring ventilation of the middle ear cleft, such as retraction pockets in the tympanic membrane or adhesive otitis media, where long-term ventilation is indicated.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A tympanostomy tube is a device that is intended to be implanted for ventilation or drainage of the middle ear. The device is inserted through the tympanic membrane to permit a free exchange of air between the outer ear and middle ear. A type of tympanostomy tube known as the malleous clip tube attaches to the malleous to provide middle ear ventilation. The device is made of materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyethylene, silicon elastomer, or porous polyethylene.
